Who Sacrifices Whom to Whom? : undergoing atonement

Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 5:00-7:00 PM (UPDATED TIME)

Hafer Center

Lancaster Theological Seminary and the LTS Allies have teamed up with Preaching Peace to bring James Alison to the LTS campus.  Join us for this unique opportunity as James offers a "mini-retreat" entitled "Who Sacrifices Whom to Whom? : undergoing atonement."

Rather than a lecture, James will lead us through a guided meditation which will ask us to place ourselves imaginatively in three different scenarios.  The cumulative effect of these will be to enable us to experience something of what is meant by the ancient and loaded term “Atonement” and see how it was that Jesus brought together in his person the liturgical, ethical/political and personal dimensions of this reality.  Attendees should be prepared for a two-hour program with a short break in the middle.

James Alison studied at Blackfriars, Oxford University, and earned his bachelor's and master’s degrees and doctorate in Theology from the Jesuit Theology Faculty in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.  He was a member of the Dominican Order from 1981 to 1995. He has lived and worked in Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the United States.  Currently he is based in São Paulo, Brazil.  He is the author of six books including Undergoing God: dispatches from the scene of a break-in, On Being Liked, and Faith Beyond Resentment: fragments Catholic and gay.  For more information, visit his website at http://www.jamesalison.co.uk.
